چکیده

Environmental impact assessments of sewage treatment plants should consider not only emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) from electricity use, but also N2O emissions generated by nitrogen removal processes, and the release of nitrogen nutrients into the water environment. Additionally, ecotoxicity of unionized ammonia is high, however no existing environmental impact assessment methodology addressed it. This study developed a methodology to evaluate the ecotoxicity of NH3 in the context of life cycle assessment. Nitrogen flow was measured in functioning sewage plants, allowing the environmental impact of changes in operating conditions, such as nitrificationinhibited or nitrification-promoted operation, to be compared. Result showed that in consideration of integrated environmental impacts, taking into account nitrogen emissions from discharge water and GHG emissions, nitrification-promoted operation is more preferable than nitrification-inhibited operation.

Life Cycle Assessment of Advanced Anaerobic Digestion Process Configurations for Sewage Sludge - a Uk Perspective

Over the past 10 years significant development has been made in advanced anaerobic digestion technologies for sewage sludge. These processes are now being implemented at large scale across the UK and within Thames Water. Although there are significant economic benefits to advanced anaerobic digestion (AD) processes, life cycle impact assessments have been limited in depth. This paper attempts t...

Modeling of Riyadh Sewage Treatment Plant: 1-Model Development, Verification and Simulation

In Saudi Arabia, the Riyadh Sewage Treatment Plant (RSTP) uses the activated sludge technology as the secondary treatment process for sewage. Due to the complex nature of the process, a rather simplified, yet practical, steady state model that captures the most important features of the RSTP was developed. Actual operating and design conditions were obtained from RSTP data bank. The monthly ave...

Expanded granular sludge bed bioreactor in wastewater treatment

The expanded granular sludge bed bioreactor appears today as a cheap, robust and more popular technology because it operates using a fluidized bed, which allows increasing in organic load and in cell retention times, generating higher treatment efficiencies (up to 95 %) and renewable energy (i.e., biogas, biomethane, and biohydrogen). Nevertheless, the efficiency of this bioreactor mainly depen...

AUTHOR: R. JAMES MAGUIRE TITLE: Review of the Persistence of Nonylphenol and Nonylphenol Ethoxylates in Aquatic Environments

Alkylphenol ethoxylates, in particular nonylphenol ethoxylates, are widely used nonionic surfactants that are discharged in high quantities to sewage treatment plants and directly to the environment in areas where there is no sewage or industrial waste treatment. This article reviews the treatability of nonylphenol ethoxylates and nonylphenol in sewage treatment plants and their persistence in ...
